As many have issues with `big tech` i ask does everything have to be shouted into a global town square? Most of the time I want to publish and be able to reference it, I don`t need to shout that loud.
I`m not saying stop using social media, but the more we stop making the easy choices, and find other ways to share, the less they will be able to set harsh terms.
This does replace the need to follow terms of service (or at least as many) with being answerable for what is on my server. The law, at this point, seems simpler to cope with.
It also means the whole thing is down to me, support, backups, upgrades, but for me that`s interesting. I totally understand those that will prefer to rent a virtual server, or even just get a square-space or similar website.
I find Self-Hosting (server in my house) to be the cheapest option, as depending how much space you need renting can become expensive. From this projects perspective, I would suggest maintaining your own backup. You content will be under the providers terms of service. If you`re happy with the TOS then fine, you can publish and drop links into social media if you like.
The important thing is whether its on, a server under the stairs, or a rented server/website online you will be in control at a physical or at least contractual level.
